Reflection
As a project for our history/english classes, we needed to make a difference. The guidelines were simple: Do an act of service using the money from the investors to make a difference in the community. For my project, I teamed up with my buddies Jackson and Brady to make a difference. The problem that we encountered was that the special needs kids may not get as much love or attention as others on Valentine’s Day. We wanted to change that this Valentine’s Day. We wanted to buy chocolates and cards for the kids and also deliver them on Valentine’s Day to help them feel loved.
As we worked on the project, we learned a few things about the problem. First, we learned that the kids don’t really get anything special on Valentine’s day in school. They just go through school just like any other school day. We also learned that they most likely get some sort of love at home. We also wanted them to feel loved and included at school was well as home.
Just like most group projects, it didn’t go as planned. For one, we didn’t end up delivering to the retirement community as planned. Our original project was to deliver to the elderly people at the home in Highland, UT. We switched to the special ed kids because we felt they needed love too and they were also right at our school. We also ran into problems on the day of our project. For one, we planned to take pictures with the kids to put on our website. When we got there, we learned that it is against the law to take pictures of the kids in the special ed program. We also figured out that there are only 10 special needs kids at our school. So, to solve our problems, we ended up delivering to the teachers too. This helped us deliver our chocolates as well as get the needed pictures. Despite the challenges we faced, we still got the project done right and on time.
Our Project relates to the theme of “Make A Difference” because we made a difference in the lives of the special needs kids. The kids had massive smiles on their faces when we delivered the chocolates. They were so grateful because they don’t often get stuff like that. This project opened our eyes and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in our school and community.
Short Term Effect:
This will effect the kids short term. They will feel loved and included. This was the goal for the project.
Long Term Effect:
This willl hopefully spark other people to do service projects and then make the world a better place.
